I sat down with Anderson Cooper on his day time talk show “Anderson” to discuss the fundamentals to fighting fat. On the show, I shared 5 simple strategies that will keep you motivated and will set you up for success. Read the tips below or visit the Anderson website for the full story and related video clips.
1. To Sustain Weight Loss: Set Small Behavioral Goals
If you have trouble sustaining a weight loss goal over the year, Dietician Dawn Jackson Blatner says it’s important to really look at what the goal is — if it’s too big, often you won’t be able to achieve. Instead, make small behavioral goals (like reorganizing your refrigerator, as seen on the show) could be a better tactic.
2. Use Event Motivation to Help Achieve Weight Loss Goals
Look at a calendar and use event motivation to help you keep your weight loss goals throughout the year. If you’re planning to do a 5K race or know you have an upcoming vacation where you’ll be wearing a swimsuit — these events will help you think twice before reaching for that second chocolate chip cookie.
3. Don’t Stock Up on Your Temptations; Schedule Trips for Sweets
Don’t Buy Ice Cream at Grocery Store, Schedule a Trip for a Cone. The more you can reduce temptation around you, the better. So, instead of buying a carton of ice cream at the grocery store, instead, schedule a trip any time you want to visit an ice cream shop. That extra step, having to drive to the ice cream show, will often deter you.
4. Breakfast is a Prevention Meal
Eating health breakfast can help you from over-eating and snacking throughout the day.
5. For a Great On-The-Go Breakfast…
If you’re in a hurry and constantly on-the-go, Dawn recommends eating for breakfast a whole grain piece of toast, (with some almond or peanut butter) and an apple or pear. Another quick and easy breakfast is a hard boiled egg, piece of toast and piece of fruit.
