PROTEIN foods are important because they support muscle growth and repair, metabolic health, immune function, and satiety/fullness.
In addition to getting the right amount of total protein each day (read about that HERE), it’s also important to get protein from a mix of both animal (fish, eggs, dairy, poultry, red meat) AND plant sources (soy foods, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds).
Research suggests eating at least 1/3 of your daily protein from plants for heart health and overall health.
For example, if your daily protein goal is 100g, aim for at least 33g of plant protein + 67g of animal protein.
Want to know what plant foods have protein and how much? You’re in luck! I created a *printable* PLANT PROTEIN CHEAT SHEET to help. xx DJB
PRO-TIP:
To hit my protein goals AND get more plant proteins in my diet, I like to practice “Protein Mixing.” This means I combine both plant protein + animal protein in meals.
For Example:
– Add chickpeas + chicken to a Caesar salad.
– Add edamame + chicken to stir-fries.
– Add black beans + turkey to chili.
– Add refried pinto beans + steak to tacos.
– Add tofu + eggs to a scramble.
– Add tempeh + ground meat to pasta sauce.
