I’m obsessed with eating food in BOWLS. And I’m not alone. Bowl Food has taken over the food universe. Poke bowls, buddha bowls, burrito bowls, grain bowls, power bowls, smoothie bowls, etc.
I LOVE this trend because eating from a bowl has BIG BENEFITS.
Charles Spence, a professor at the University of Oxford, suggests that eating food from a bowl can 1) make food tastier, 2) lead to greater meal satisfaction, and 3) help you naturally eat less. The rational is that food touches all inner edges of a bowl to give us the perception that there’s MORE food than if it was just sitting in the middle of a plate.
And because you can hold a bowl with both of your hands and it feels more intimate & cozy than plated food, bowl food may even give you a more warm, optimistic view of the world! Maybe that’s a bit of a stretch, but it feels right to me.
HEALTHY BOWL RATIOS:
The perfect bowl has about 50% produce + 25% protein + 25% whole grains/potatoes + a little fat topping.
MY PERFECT BOWL SIZE:
– If you get too small of a bowl it can’t fit enough veggies.
– If you get too big of a bowl, research finds you will automatically serve yourself around 30% extra.
– The bowl size I like BEST:
6″ diameter to hold ~24 fluid oz.
