I just got back from the Little League Baseball World Series in Williamsport, PA. ⚾️
I talked to young athletes and their families about… my experience being the head dietitian for the Chicago CUBS for 10 years, what it was like to earn a WORLD SERIES RING, and I answered NUTRITION questions.
I met SO many people and the number one question I got asked… I want to eat better, where should I start?
My answer: “DO SIMPLE BETTER.”
This was one of the mantras the CUBS manager Joe Maddon said as we played the World Series season.
“DO SIMPLE BETTER” for NUTRITION means:
You just need to commit to practicing & improving the BASICS. You do NOT need to go on a special diet, make drastic changes that are impossible to keep up, or deprive yourself of favorite foods.
What NUTRITION BASICS can you focus on?
START HERE:
#1. EAT MEALS.
Ditch the graze/snack/munch vibes, and instead make time to eat 3 balanced meals a day. Read more about the “meal mindset” HERE.
Pro-Tips:
– “Front-load” meals, meaning eat more in the morning/afternoon than evening. You’ll be shocked at how this helps appetite, cravings, and a sweet tooth throughout the day & night.
– When you eat, use the TABLE-PLATE-CHAIR rule. Sitting at a table, eating from a plate is the quickest way to naturally eat less, and enjoy food more.
#2. PRIORITIZE PROTEIN.
Make sure each meal has protein. Keep it “flex” meaning sometimes plant-based protein and sometimes animal-based protein. Read more about where to get protein HERE.
#3. ADD COLORFUL PRODUCE.
Make sure each meal has fruits & veggies. They add powerful disease-fighting nutrients and fresh life force to your body! Don’t overthink this, just find produce and add it to meals (and snacks when you have them like THESE.)
BONUS: MAKE IT FEEL EASIER.
Want nutrition to feel easier? Exercise and sleep. When you move your body daily + let it reset with 8 hours of sleep each night, you’ll have the ENERGY to care more about your nutrition!
