Struggle with emotional eating?
Or feel like you know what to eat, but your self-talk seems to sabotage you?
At the core of so many of our unhealthy eating issues is… Body Dissatisfaction. Body Dissatisfaction is the negative perception of your body’s physical appearance.
Research shows that the MORE you beat yourself up about how your body looks, the MORE likely you are to struggle with emotional eating & the MORE likely you are to make unhealthy choices.🤯
And this makes perfect sense because “You can’t heal a body you hate.” If you are endlessly hating on your body, you will NOT be motivated to LOVE IT with healthy habits and healthy foods.
Think about it, if there’s someone in your life you don’t really like, it’s pretty hard to want to do nice things for them. On the other hand, if you have people in your life who you love & appreciate, it is easy to do nice things for them. The same is true for us, if we feel love & appreciation for our body, it’s easier to treat ourselves well.
The MOST POWERFUL thing you can do to shift toxic body dissatisfaction is to practice BODY GRATITUDE.
BODY GRATITUDE is when you appreciate what your body can do BEYOND WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE!!! It’s acknowledging and celebrating your body’s strength, resilience, and abilities.
Researchers have found that when you start showing your body compassion and appreciate all the things your body can do BEYOND WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE… emotional eating decreases, healthy eating increases, and quality of life soars. Whoa.
✨INCREASE BODY GRATITUDE✨
Here are 2 things you can do to start cultivating BODY GRATITUDE…
1. CATCH & FLIP
When you CATCH those inner negative voices creeping in to say bad things about how your body looks, FLIP the script to THANKING YOUR BODY. For example:
– brain for creativity, problem-solving, storing memories
– eyes for seeing the beauty all around
– heart for pumping blood throughout my body
– lungs for breathing in oxygen to keep me alive
– stomach for digesting food and turning it into energy
– arms & hands for carrying things & giving hugs
– legs & feet for walking, dancing, jumping rope
– etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.
2. BODY GRATITUDE MANTRA
Repeat a body gratitude mantra throughout the day such as: “I love myself. I am thankful for all my body can do.” It is much harder for body dissatisfaction to creep in when you are constantly giving your body a pep talk.
Pro-tip: I find this mantra especially helpful when making meal/snack/night eating decisions because it helps those choices come from a place of compassion & love. xx
