And to do that effectively, we spend lots of time reprogramming THOUGHTS!
“I already know this stuff, I just gotta get myself to do it.”
…if any of this sounds like YOU, don’t worry!
These are all signs you have a “KNOWING-DOING GAP.” And everyone struggles with it in some aspect of their life & habits.
THE KNOWING-DOING GAP
You KNOW what to do, but you aren’t DOING it.
“Something” is getting in the way of you taking action.
And that something is: YOUR THOUGHTS.
THE ISSUE
Your thoughts… create your feelings… which create your actions. If your actions aren’t what you want, it’s time to change your THOUGHTS. It all starts with thoughts.
THE FIX
Oh my goodness! I created a new powerful worksheet to help you work on your KNOWING-DOING GAP. And it’s a strategy based on an ACRONYM (I just love acronyms, so easy to remember.)
To help BRIDGE THE GAP between what you know to do and actually doing it, use the acronym G.A.P.
To set you up for success…
The worksheet begins with reflecting on your WHY. More powerful than knowing HOW to fix something is knowing WHY you care in the first place.
Once you do that, it’s time to work on the G.A.P. acronym…
G: Gather
– Gather/write down any thoughts standing in your way of taking action.
– Often you know these as “excuses,” but that is a judgemental way to think about them.
– Instead, use an attitude of curiosity to list out the “oh-so-creative” barriers & obstacles your mind has concocted.
A: Adjust
– Adjust the “excuses” to thoughts that are more motivating, kind, and simple.
– Have fun with this, and brainstorm any new thoughts you can start thinking.
– Write anything down, just guess at some ideas.
P: Practice
– Practice your new thoughts to test how they affect your actions.
– There will likely be one new thought that stands out as the most inspiring and encouraging.
– You know your new thought is “working” when you actually do your desired habit more often (not perfectly) and feel more in control and hopeful.
