3 Random & Useful Nutrition Ideas
I’ve got a few nutrition ideas on my mind, so enjoy this random mix of facts & tips…
1. USE A THERMOMETER
The best-tasting (and safest) way to cook poultry, meat, and fish is to use a thermometer. Using a thermometer to cook protein to the right temperature ensures that it’s not underdone (and unsafe) and it’s not overdone (and too dry)!
You may think you have a “feel” for when it’s done because you’ve cooked protein hundreds of times, but using a thermometer is more precise so you consistently get the best quality. And, if you are someone who just cuts into your protein to see if it’s done, that makes it less juicy. Instead, a thermometer pokes just a tiny hole so more juice stays in the protein.
THIS is the quick-read thermometer I have (in the kitchen gadgets section). You get the temp of your protein in just 3 seconds.
Thermometer Targets:
Put the thermometer in the thickest part & hit these temps:
all poultry: 165° F (ground 165° F)
beef/pork: 145° F (ground 160° F)
fish: 145° F
PS: HERE is a more complete list of target temps.
2. WHAT TO DRINK, WHEN YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE DRINKING
I’m in situations often when I want to socialize, but I don’t want to drink alcohol. One of my favorite solutions is to order a “club soda with a few drops of bitters.” I call it Sparkling Bitters.
Bitters are made from steeping herbs & spices in alcohol. So technically they contain alcohol, but because you are only using a few drops, it’s very minimal. And because bitters are botanic-based, they may even help with digestion. (PS: Bitters are available in non-alcoholic versions, but those aren’t typically at restaurants & bars.)
3. CUT VEGGIE SMALLER
My newest discovery… chopped-up veggies taste better! My hubs and I recently made a sriracha salmon dinner bowl with broccoli. I usually like broccoli, but I LOVED it in this bowl. And the secret to why the broccoli was so good: IT WAS CHOPPED UP INTO SMALL PIECES. Those smaller pieces felt less overwhelming & more fun. Give extra chopping a try and see if you agree!
In the dinner bowl: grilled salmon + quinoa and cauliflower rice + broccoli (WELL CHOPPED) + avocado cubes + sriracha.
