The holidays are here, and with them come fun parties, festive meals, and a buffet of treats at every turn. While it’s a season to savor, it’s easy to overdo it and end up feeling sluggish or out of control around food.
That’s why I’ve been leaning into one powerful nutrition strategy to stay healthy and feel great: Mindful Eating.
Why Mindful Eating Works
I recently came across a fascinating study published in the Journal of the American Nutrition Association. This research analyzed 94 studies and found…
MINDFUL EATING may help:
- Emotional eating
- Overeating
- Weight loss
- Blood sugar levels
Mindful eating is more than just a trendy idea—it’s a proven tool for improving digestion, fostering a healthier relationship with food, and making choices aligned with your well-being.
What Is Mindful Eating?
Mindful eating is about being fully present during meals, tuning into the experience, and listening to your body’s cues. It helps you slow down, appreciate your food, and recognize when you’re satisfied. This practice encourages a deeper connection with what and how you eat, leading to better physical and emotional health.
Try the 3 S’s of Mindful Eating
Want to give mindful eating a try, especially during this festive season? Practice my 3 S’s for Mindful Eating:
1. SIT
Always eat sitting down, preferably at a table. Standing or eating on the go often leads to mindless munching and overeating. Aim to put your food on a plate (or even a napkin) to give your brain the cues it needs to help you feel more satisfied. Read more about table-plate-chair HERE.
2. SAVOR
Take small bites, chew thoroughly (this also helps you feel less bloated!), and truly taste your food. Pay attention to the flavors, textures, and aromas. Slowing down enhances the joy of eating and helps your body recognize when it’s satisfied.
3. SINGLE-TASK
Eat with fewer distractions and make eating your main focus. Put down your phone, step away from emails, and turn off the TV. At a bustling holiday party, find a quieter spot to enjoy your plate with friends. Be present while you eat so you notice how the food makes your body feel.
The Holidays Are Perfect for Mindful Eating
During the holidays, it’s easy to fall into habits like grazing on appetizers, nibbling while standing, or snacking without paying attention. Mindful eating can help you fully enjoy every bite, avoid overeating, and feel more in control. Plus, it’s a simple, joyful practice that allows you to connect with the people and moments around you.
A Joyful, Balanced Approach
Mindful eating isn’t about restriction or guilt—it’s about adding more joy and intention to your meals. By incorporating mindfulness, you’ll not only improve your nutrition but also make the season more meaningful.
So, as you head to your next holiday gathering, remember the 3 S’s: SIT, SAVOR, SINGLE-TASK. Let’s make this season one of celebration, connection, and nourishment—not just for the body but for the soul, too.
Wishing you and your loved ones the happiest and healthiest of holidays!
