NIGHT SNACKERS! I GOT YOU…
You’ve had dinner. You’ve had dessert.
But now it’s 9:37pm and you’re thinking… just one more scoop (or slice or handful).
Sound familiar?
You’re not alone. Nighttime snacking is one of the top patterns people ask for my help with.
So here are 6 smart strategies to help calm the night munchies, without relying on willpower…
6 NIGHT SNACKING STRATEGIES
1. EAT ENOUGH DURING THE DAY
– Undereating earlier = overeating later. Especially if skipping meals or under-fueling breakfast/lunch.
– Aim for protein, smart carbs, colorful produce, and healthy fat at each meal to stabilize blood sugar and appetite.
2. PLAN A SATISFYING DINNER + DESSERT
– Pre-decide what feels fun and full: a balanced meal and a treat.
– Planning something you actually enjoy eating reduces impulsive snacking.
3. DELAY, DON’T DEPRIVE
– Tell yourself: “If I want it, I can have it in the morning.” That lessens the urgency and stops the all-or-nothing spiral. You’re not saying no, you’re saying not now.
– And in the morning, if you do still want that extra piece of pizza or spoonfuls of peanut butter with chocolate chips, have it as part of a balanced breakfast.
4. CREATE BEDTIME RITUALS
– Practice simple cues to tell your brain it’s time to rest, not snack. Think: tea, stretching, journaling, reading, brushing your teeth, or skin care.
– Just like a bedtime story helps kids settle down, adults need wind-down cues, too.
5. STOP MORALIZING FOOD
– Thinking “I was bad today” can trigger late-night rebellion or shame-eating.
– Practice neutral, curious self-talk. You’re more likely to make empowered choices when you remove shame from the equation.
6. TREAT NIGHT CRAVINGS AS A CLUE
– Instead of a failure, treat it like feedback: “What do I need right now that my snack craving is trying to tell me?”
– Tired? Bored? Stressed? Food won’t fix it. An earlier bedtime, creative project, or meditation might.
And Remember:
If you’re actually hungry at night, eat. It’s as simple as that. Choose a balanced snack with protein, like yogurt & berries or a slice of cheese & grapes.
Then continue practicing more balanced meals earlier in the day to help reset your appetite rhythm over time.
